Screaming Like Banshees
The Banshees of Inisherin
The Banshees of Inisherin is a new black comedy from writer/director Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards, Seven Psychopaths). Banshees is the first time McDonagh has worked with actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson since they made the excellent In Bruges fifteen years ago. That alone made Banshees of Inisherin a must-play for us.
Two more days of Provoke
On Wednesday (11/2) we’ll play Ida Lupino’s noir thriller The Hitch-Hiker, followed by Carolie Fargeat’s brutal action/horror hybrid Revenge. Thursday (11/3) we’ll close out the fest with Julia Docournau’s Raw, and one final show of…
Slash/Back
The story of the making of Slash/Back is almost as cool as the movie itself. The films was shot on location in the Inuit town of Pangnirtung, Nanavut. Rather than fly in a cast, director Nyla Innuksuk (who grew up in Nanavut) opted to host an acting clinic, and recruit a cast from the local community.
The end result feels like a rough around the edges mash-up of Goonies and The Thing, with a great sense of place. Our last show will be Thursday (11/3) at 8:45, so don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind film.
VHS NIGHT… OF THE CREEPS
Join us Friday for Night of the Creeps, which is quite possibly the best movie we’ve ever shown on VHS Night.
Night of the Creeps is a clever horror comedy that was lightyears ahead of its time, and has the dismal box office returns to prove it. Thankfully it found a home on rental shelves and amassed a small, but dedicated, following.
The trailer is below, but take it with a grain of salt. The studio didn’t think a horror/comedy would sell, so they did their damnedest to make it look like a straight-up horror flick. Don’t be fooled.
PS: No tape swap on VHS Night this month. It was a fun experiment and we’re grateful to Hollywood Babylon for organizing it, but it ended up being one thing too many, and it got chaotic. We may try again, but as a standalone event.
