This Week
From Kiyoshi Korusawa (Cure, Tokyo Sonata). When Lord Murashige Araki rises up against the tyrannical Nobunaga Oda, he finds himself besieged within the walls of his own castle. Isolated, he is confronted with a series of mysterious crimes that shatter the fragile order of his court, plunging the fortress into fear and suspicion. With Oda’s army closing in and a traitor hiding among his ranks, Murashige is forced into an uneasy alliance with Kanbei Kuroda, a brilliant yet dangerous strategist held prisoner in the dungeon.

KAY: Chocolat feels like a fairy tale! Beloved by myself, and my mom, it’s a simple story of a mysterious, nomadic woman, her daughter, and their pop-up exotic chocolate shop. Their little shop strips away the ridged, business as usual, attitude of the villagers (with help from a riverbound Johnny Depp). It also taught me to add cayenne to brownies!

RYAN: Fantastic Mr. Fox is my favorite stop motion picture. It’s a fun and unique film that people of all ages can equally enjoy, and Wes Anderson’s style is perfect for the world of stop motion filmmaking

NICK: We’ve been playing encore shows of The Furious for over 2 months now, and I guess I’m just not ready to let go. If you’ve been to a show, you know why. Director Kenji Tanigaki knows exactly how to work a crowd, and he expertly keeps the whole room flinching, cheering, gasping and laughing together. It’s the kind of big, shared, holy-shit-that-was-cool experience that makes this job so satisfying.

LOGAN: Underworld was a movie I frequently pulled out at sleepovers as a kid, to show my friends a battle between vampires and werewolves, occurring in a that looked like an Evanescence music video. It’s basically Twilight for boys, and it rules.

City Lights, the most cherished film by Charlie Chaplin, is also his ultimate Little Tramp chronicle. The writer-director-star achieved new levels of grace, in both physical comedy and dramatic poignancy, with this silent tale of a lovable vagrant falling for a young blind woman who sells flowers on the street (a magical Virginia Cherrill) and mistakes him for a millionaire. Though this Depression-era smash was made after the advent of sound, Chaplin remained steadfast in his love for the expressive beauty of the pre-talkie form. The result was the epitome of his art and the crowning achievement of silent comedy.
