One Year. One Screen. 100 Movies.
As we approached our one-year anniversary, we were on target to play about 95 films in our first year as owners. Then we figured, what the hell, let’s go for 100.
Thus, The March to 100 was born. Between July 15 and 21, we’re going to play 15 different films in one week. On top of that, we’re going to post a leaderboard in the lobby, and offer some perks to whoever sees the most movies that week.
Learn more and about our Anniversary Weekend and the March to 100 on our website.
John Carpenter Double Feature:
They Live & Escape from New York
They Live is a sci-fi, anti-consumerist rallying cry. Escape from New York is an anti-authoritarian action movie. 80’s John Carpenter had things to say, and his movies were all the better for it.
Friday (7/15) - 7:00 They Live, 9:00 Escape from New York
Saturday (7/16) - 7:00 Escape from New York, 9:00 They Live
There Will Be Blood
An impeccably crafted frontier drama, featuring two of the best performances ever put on screen (courtesy of Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano). This is our 4th time playing There Will be Blood. We really like this movie.
Sunday (7/17) - 6:00
NOTCOOL Presents:
School of Rock
Jack Black plays an extremely enthusiastic slacker who gets drafted to teach music class to children. It sounds cliched, but it’s not, it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
Sunday (7/17) - 12:30
…And the March to 100
Quick write-ups below, but you can learn more and check out trailers on the Event Page.
Crimson PEak
A visual feast from Guillermo Del Toro that got lost between the big loud fun of Pacific Rim, and the awards buzz of Shape of Water. Crimson Peak see’s Del Toro fully embracing his gothic sensibilities to create an unsettling, supernatural romance.
Saturday (7/16) - 4:15
Speed Racer
Speed Racer is a fully realized, meticulously crafted sugar rush. It commits to capturing the energy of anime, and charges ahead with no shame and no restraint.
Sunday (7/17) - 3:00
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky
Riki-Oh does the impossible: it goes over the top in the first ten minutes, but never stops finding ways to one-up itself. Possibly the bloodiest kung-fu movie ever made.
Sunday (7/17) - 9:15
An American Warewolf in London
An American Werewolf in London wasn’t the first horror comedy, but it’s willingness to embrace both the horror and comedy halves of its lineage set it apart.
Monday (7/18) - 7:00
Revenchist
Revenchist merges a bloody, 80’s Hong Kong bullet ballet with the floaty wire-fu of a Shaw Brothers film. The end result is nuts. Tickets are only $5 for this one.
Monday (7/18) - 9:00
Videodrome
Cryptic, hallucinogenic, and squirm inducing, Videodrome is Cronenberg in concentrated form.
Tuesday (7/19) - 7:00
Electric Dragon 80.000V
Electric Dragon 80.000V tells the story of electrically charged reptile investigator Dragon Eye Morrison, and features so much blasting noise-punk that it’s almost a music video. It runs a brisk 55 minutes, so we’re going to charge $5 for this one.
Tuesday (7/19) - 9:00
Live. Die. Repeat. (Aka Edge of tomorrow)
One of the best big-screen movies of the last decade, Live. Die. Repeat. (originally released under the much blander Edge of Tomorrow) is massive scale sci-fi action done right.
Wednesday (7/20) - 7:00
Upgrade
Upgrade is a cyberpunk body-horror action movie that’s lean, visceral, and surprisingly funny. In 10 years it will be a midnight movie staple, so let’s skip the wait, OK?
Wednesday (7/20) - 9:30
The People Under the Stairs
The People Under the Stairs may be the strangest film Wes Craven ever made. It’s also a surprisingly smart, subversive gem of early 90’s horror.
Thursday (7/21) - 4:30
