Good Ideas Stay Good

We play catch-up on a few bookings that didn’t work out.

Get Out and Us

A few months ago, before the release of Jordan' Peele’s Nope, we wanted to run a retrospective of his work so far. At the time, Boring Licensing Stuff prevented it. Now we’re bringing the idea back… in slightly modified form.

Get Out is a focused, flawless modern masterpiece. It kickstarted Peele’s career, and helped launch the horror renaissance we’re still enjoying today. His second feature, Us, proved more divisive on release, and that’s a compliment. It’s an ambitious film that looks so good you almost forget how damn weird it is.

Get Out and Us play September 3-6. Showtimes vary by day.

John Wick and Keanu Double Feature

Get Out and Us are great, but 2 movies does not a mini-fest make. If we wanted to highlight the work of Jordan Peele, we needed more.

After some looking, we remembered that Peele’s first theatrical writing credit wasn’t a horror movie, or a film he directed, but the action-comedy Keanu.

Then someone joked about doing a John Wick/Keanu double feature, and here we are.

Saturday, September 3
John Wick - 7:00
Keanu - 9:15

The Thing

When we ran our annual John Carpenter Double Feature last month, a lot of you noticed The Thing had been replaced with Escape From New York. This was because Boring Licensing Stuff had made The Thing unavailable.

Well, now it’s available, and we promised we’d play it as soon as we could. Turns out that’s Friday, right before VHS night.

Friday (9/2) - 7:00
Sunday (9/4) - 9:15

Sneek Preview

From September 9 - 15, we’re going to spend a week showing the work of cinematographer Roger Deakins.

You may not know who Roger Deakins is, but you definitely know his work. He was the Coen Brothers go to Cinematographer for decades, and his other credits range from 1984 to Shawshank Redemption to Blade Runner 2049. It’s hard to think of anyone working today, in any role, who has amassed such a long list of credits while maintaining such a high level of quality.

We’ll have the final schedule up in a few days, followed by another newsletter with a little insight into why we chose the films we did.
