Support the Cinemagic

I’m going to break with tradition this week, and not write the newsletter as though I were a sentient movie theater sharing news about itself. I’m Nick, one of the owners of the Cinemagic. I write the newsletters.

You may have noticed that it’s been nearly a month since the last email. Sorry about that. We’re a small operation (4 people to be exact), and I’ve had my hands full preparing for a very exciting fall.

Now, we’re ready to talk about it.

We’re launching a fundraiser

This is something we’ve been very reluctant to do, so why the change of heart? I won’t copy it all here, but there’s a big breakdown on the support page. The short version is that there are things we want to do at the theater to better support our community, staff, and environment. These are also things that will almost definitely cost more money than they make, and we don’t have the financial cushion to do them on our own.

Something I want to make very clear: This is not a “SAVE THE CINEMAGIC” campaign. Money is tight, but we’re OK. This is a way for people to help if they want to, but no one should feel obliged.

Lobby Expansion

There’s a lot more detail about this on the support page, but the reason we’re launching a fundraiser at this specific moment is because we’ve secured the lease on a neighboring storefront.

This new space will be joined to our lobby, and include a seating area that will be open before and after movies. This serves the dual purpose of fostering the odd little community that’s emerged around the theater, and stabilizing staff hours. It also has a utility area, and greatly improved access to building infrastructure. Most notably, we’ll finally be able to put in a dishwasher and dramatically cut back on single use cups.

That’s nice, what about upcoming movies?

Before we launched the fundraiser, we got ready to be as open as possible about what’s ahead for the theater. In that spirit, we locked in almost all our bookings for the next 2 months. Here they are:

Finally, I just want to say thanks. This is a very cool job, even when it’s chaotic and exhausting, and It’s a job I wouldn’t have without you all. Whatever support we do (or don’t) get, we’re committed to making all of these things happen.

Thanks again,
Nick
