Staff Picks

Believe it or not, a grand total of four people work at the Cinemagic (owners included). This crew handles everything from pouring beer to 35mm projection, so it only seemed fitting that everyone get the chance to do a little film booking too.

Ryan’s Pick

Ryan: One of my biggest escapes growing up was watching my favorite actor, Sean Penn, lose himself in his roles. Mystic River won Penn his first Best Actor Oscar for playing Jimmy Markum, an ex-con whose daughter is found dead. Put simply, I chose Mystic River because it's got my favorite actor, and it’s one of my all-time favorite dramas.

Nick’s Pick

Nick: I’ve been looking for an excuse to get The Caller on screen for years, but it never really fit. It’s an off-kilter, two-character thriller that’s too serious for VHS Night and too damn strange for anything else. The Caller is a truly singular thriller that might leave you a little lost at times, but don’t worry, it all makes sense in the end. Sort of.

JJ’s Pick

Wednesday (10/11) - 7:00

JJ: I discovered But I’m a Cheerleader when I was 15, and just starting to come to terms with my identity. Before that I remember most movies portraying queer lives as tragic or wrong, so it meant the world to me. It centers the story of Megan, a wholesome Christian teen whose parents, boyfriend, and cheer squad decide, unbeknownst to her, that she’s a lesbian. She’s sent away to a colorful conversation camp full of quirky LGBTQ characters out to "fix" the sexuality she vehemently rejects.

Jade’s Pick

Thursday (10/12) - 7:00

Jade: It's a modern-day fairy tale with a solid cast, and mermaids are cool! It's just a nice fun movie that I grew up with, that has always resonated with me (as I probably spend half my time in the bath).
