Moon Garden on 35mm

Moon Garden tells the story of Emma, a little girl who falls into a coma and awakens in an industrial nightmare. With only her mother’s radio-static voice to guide her, Emma must find her way back to consciousness as a nightmare specter follows her, feeding on her tears.

Filmed over 3 years using old 35mm film stock and re-purposed lenses, Moon Garden is a labor of love shot without CGI. All the effects in the film were achieved using simple composites, and old fashioned in-camera trickery.

We just test ran the first reel, and it looks incredible. Moon Garden is a testament to what can be achieved with analogue equipment and meticulous film craft.

Moon Garden plays June 2, 5, 6 & 8 at 7:00. June 3 & 4 at 4:30 and 7:00. June 7 at 4:30. Tickets

VHS Night: Class of 1999

In the distant future of 1999, schools have become so violent that police won’t enter, and gangs are left to run the school. When a team of terminator-esque android teachers are sent in to restore order, it goes about how you imagine.

Class of 1999 is an odd one. It’s absurd, and it’s got some serious scenery chewing from Pam Greer and Malcolm McDowell, but it also has a solid emotional core and more than a few things on its mind. It’s exactly the kind of underseen oddity VHS night is all about.

Class of 1999 plays Friday, June 2. Doors at 9:00, Trailers at 9:30, movie at 10:00. Tickets

Cinema City: Mr. Vampire

After a few delays, we’re finally getting the Hong Kong horror-comedy classic Mr. Vampire on screen.

Mr. Vampire defined what a jiangshi* movie is, and inspired countless imitators. It’s easy to see why. It mixes a dizzying array of genres into a single whirlwind action/comedy/horror/romance, but it never feels rushed or disjointed like so many Hong Kong movies from the 80’s.

*Don’t know what a jiangshi is? They’re somewhere between a zombie and a vampire, but thy aren’t necessarily evil. There’s a little more to the mythos than that, but Mr. Vampire does a great job laying the foundation for the uninitiated.

Mr. Vampire plays on Wednesday, June 7 at 7:00 as part of the Cinema City series. Tickets

Family Matinee: A Goofy Movie

In the princess-heavy world of 90’s Disney films A Goofy Movie is an outlier. It’s a wonderful coming of age story about accepting your parents, even though they aren’t cool. I’m not pointing fingers, but if you have kids, you should probably come.

A Goofy Movie plays Saturday, June 3 at Noon. Tickets

The Patio is back

The title says it all, we’ve got the patio back up for the summer. It’s a great place to chill out and drink a beer when you show up early, or get some fresh air between shows on a double feature.
