Portland premier of the new Documentary King on Screen, and four classic Stephen King adaptations.

In 1976, Brian de Palma directed Carrie, the first novel by Stephen King. Since then, over 50 directors have adapted more than 80 films and series, making King the worlds most adapted living author. King on Screen explores what's so fascinating about his work, and reunites the filmmakers that have adapted King's books, including Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, The Mist), Tom Holland (Childs Play, The Langoliers), and many more.

Though it’s widely regarded as one of the greatest Horror films of all time, King himself expressed reservations about Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining. Admittedly, Kubrick took liberties that make Kings opinion easy to understand, but we think both versions are great. The films more ambiguous narrative, coupled with the ever-shifting Overlook Hotel, makes for an amazing big-screen experience.

Brian de Palma directed Carrie in 1976, a mere 2 years after the release of the novel (which was Kings first). The rest is history. Carrie was released to immediate acclaim, and was a pivotal film for King adaptations, and horror films in general. It’s a haunting exploration of alienation and youth that culminates in one of the most horrific, and memorable, finales in film history.

Born from their mutual love of the colorfully macrabe EC Horror comics, Creepshow was a collaboration between director George Romero (Night of the Living Dead) and King (in his screenwriting debut). King wrote three original stories for the anthology, and adapted two of his own shorts. The result is a goofy, creepy, loving homage to schlocky old-school horror.

King has gone on record multiple times stating that Misery is one of his favorite adaptations. Considering the talent involved, it’s easy to see why. Kathy Bates delivers an Oscar winning performance, while the writer director combo of Rob Reiner and William Goldman (fresh off their collaboration on the very different Princess Bride) craft a claustrophobic thriller worthy of the performance.
