Hard Science
Whether it’s the limits of space, or the human problems we face every day, speculative fiction lets us push at the edges of the world. We’ve lined 5 of our favorite down-to-earth science fiction films, because big ideas don’t always need a big budget.
Children of Men is a heady mix of speculative fiction and bravura film-craft. Set in a dystopic future where human infertility has led society to the brink of collapse, activist turned bureaucrat Theo is recruited to help a pregnant refugee flee the crumbling U.K. police state.

District 9 is a 15-year-old, low budget production that still looks better than most modern blockbusters. But, once you look past the impressive effects work, it’s a movie with a lot on its mind. It’s no coincidence that the films story of racism, government created slums and ill-treated refugees came from a South African film team.

Moon is the week’s only feature that’s actually set in space, which is ironic, because it’s also the most focused. It’s a simple set-up, but the films trajectory is anything but predictable, and Sam Rockwell makes it all work with a career best performance.

Made for a staggeringly cheap $7,000, Primer is a testament to just what can be accomplished with a great script. It’s a time-travel head trip that respects the audiences intelligence, and delves headlong into “what if” questions most time-travel films are afraid to even acknowledge.

South Korean director Bong Joon-ho was making incredible films long before the breakout success of Parasite. Snowpiercer tackles ideas of class equality and redemption, but avoids easy answers and simple characters. And of course, because it’s Bong Joon-ho, the whole thing is perfectly assembled.
