Golden Harvest

Cinema City regulars may know the Golden Harvest logo by heart, but wanted to showcase the prolific production house beyond the output of their Hong Kong heyday. This week we’ll highlight the Bruce Lee films that built their empire, their American production efforts, and the oft overlooked dramas that make up their extended catalogue.

There would have been no Golden Harvest without the films of Bruce Lee. Lee’s films were an international phenomenon that would fund the rapid expansion of the burgeoning Hong Kong studio. Lee could bounce between charismatic leading man and terrifying force of nature with ease, while his rapid fire, down to earth action choreography set the tone for Hong Kong cinema to come.

By the mid 80’s, a new star had emerged. Jackie Chan’s slapstick stunt work and ambitious fight choreography captured the attention of movie goers worldwide. If you’ve never seen a classic Chan flick, Police Story makes for a hell of an introduction. Chan is in top form, and the films is packed with sequences you really have to see to believe.

Directed by pioneering queer melodrama master Stanley Kwan. Rouge bridges past and present in its tragic romance between a humble courtesan and the wayward scion of a wealthy family, who embrace death by suicide pact amid the opulent teahouses of 1930s Hong Kong. Fifty years later, she returns to the city-state to find him, drawing a young contemporary couple into her quest to rekindle a passion that may be as illusory as time itself.

After scaling back US productions across most of the 80’s, Golden Harvest re-entered the US market in a big way with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Thanks to their experience with kung fu films, and some seriously impressive work from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the film was a success, despite it’s seemingly impossible combination of complex animatronics and constant martial arts battles.
