Getting Even

For as long as people have been making movies, they’ve been making revenge movies. This week we’ve got a global sampler with revenge movies of all stripes, from family classics to existential bloodbaths.

The breakout release from Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room), Blue Ruin is a bluntly tense thriller about a drifter who returns home seeking revenge, only for his ineptitude as a hitman to ignite a ruthless battle for his estranged family.

Tuesday (6/25) - 7:00

While searching for a missing man, retired Marine Chance Boudreaux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) discovers a secret organization that arranges for wealthy clients to hunt homeless veterans as sport. Hard Target is the best kind of (slightly cheesy) 90’s action, and an underappreciated gem from John Woo (Hard Boiled).

Wednesday (6/26) - 4:40

It would be a shame to give away the twisting plot of South Korean horror-thriller I Saw the Devil. So, here’s what you need to know: it’s unflinching, unpredictable, and straight up brilliant, with great performance from Choi Min-sik (Oldboy). If you really need to know more, check out the trailer.

Saturday (6/22) - 7:00
Wednesday (6/26) - 7:00

A Japanese classic, Lady Snowblood stars Meiko Kaji as a woman born only for revenge. Often imitated, but never surpassed, it’s an ultra-stylish Jidaigeki film that isn’t afraid to explore just how inhumane and messy revenge can be.

Saturday (6/26) - 10:00
Monday (6/24) - 7:00

We went looking for a feel-good revenge movie for the week and... yeah. There aren’t many. Thankfully, there’s The Princess Bride, a swashbuckling throwback with absolutely perfect casting, and so many great lines you can probably quote it even if you’ve never seen it.

Alejandro Iñárritu’s frontier epic follows trapper Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) as he endures the journey back to camp after being betrayed, abandoned, and mauled by a bear. It’s a harrowing vision, masterfully captured by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Children of Men).
