If nancy doesn’t wake up screaming, she won’t wake up at all

In a world of amorphous slasher-killers, Freddy stood out. He wasn’t just terrifying, he had personality. Movie after movie wanted you to fear the unknown, but A Nightmare on Elm Street didn’t leave any mystery. The killer was Freddy Kruger, and he was terrifying.

The man of your dreams is back

It’s hard to believe that neither the writer nor director of Freddy’s Revenge intended the films homoerotic undertones. After writer David Chaskin spent years faulting star Mark Patton for emphasizing the films gay subtext, Patton’s response was simple: “I love when [he] uses the word 'subtext’. Did [he] actually go to a freshman English course in high school? This is not subtext.”

If you think you’ll get out alive, you must be dreaming

After the fascinating detour of Freddy’s Revenge, Heather Langenkamp returns to the star role as Nancy Thompson in a direct sequel to the first film. For a lot of folks this is a good as the Nightmare on Elm Street got, deftly balancing surreal visuals, strong characters, and an increasingly playful (but still terrifying) Freddy Kruger.

The one you’ve been screaming for

The Final Chapter may be the 4th Friday the 13th movie, but it wasn’t until this entry that Jason Vorhees truly became the mask wearing mass murderer we all know and love. The Final Chapter is the pure distillation of 80’s slasher, anchored by likable performances, the emergence of Tommy Jarvis as a real threat to the murderous Vorhees, and a spectacular dance number by Chrispen Glover.

Kill or Be Killed

Jason Lives finds Tommy Jarvis all grown up, battle ready and determined to put an end to Jason Vorhees once and for all. For the first time, Jason became an unequivocally supernatural force of evil, more unstoppable than ever.

Evil gets an upgrade

Worried that your franchise is running out of steam? At the turn of the century there was only one solution: send it to space. If only all franchises did so with the gusto of Jason X, a film so bonkers we’ve long considered it for VHS Night. From kung-fu robots to Uber-Jason, it charges full speed into every questionable idea, and we love it for that.

Saturday (9/16) - 9:10

winner kills all

Freddy Vs. Jason could have been a lazy cash in, but someone at Paramount made the genuinely bizarre (and brilliant) decision to hire Hong Kong action director Ronny Yu. The end result is an unrepentant, unhinged horror-action throw-down between the two genre greats.
