Cornetto and Friends
Moon Garden (35mm) Encore Saturday
First off, some late-breaking news: the response to Moon Garden has been great, and it’s only gotten busier as word-of-mouth spread. We’ve added an encore matinee show at 4:00 this Saturday. Tickets
7 Flavors Cornetto
In the span of 9 years, director Edgar Wright and writer Simon Pegg created one of the best horror/comedies ever made, one of the best action/comedies ever made, and one of the best sci-fi/comedies ever made. Together, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End make up the 3 Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, a loose collection of films tied together by theme, tone, and convenience store ice cream cones.
All of these films are packed with references, so we’re pairing each one with a classic it pays homage to. They’re scheduled like double features, but per usual shows are ticketed individually, so you can pick and choose individual movies.
Shaun of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead
Shaun of the Dead has callbacks to Zombie films ranging from the stalwart Dawn of the Dead to the genre re-inventing 28 Days Later, but none of these movies would exist without George Romero’s groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead.
Friday (6/9) - Night of the Living Dead plays at 7:00, Shaun of the Dead plays at 9:10. Tickets
Monday (6/12) - Night of the Living Dead plays at 5:20, Shaun of the Dead plays at 7:30. Tickets
Hot Fuzz and Point Break
Hot Fuzz is loaded with shout-outs to the greats of pulp action, so it’s no surprise that the film pays homage to Kathryn Bigelow’s ridiculously entertaining (and surprisingly thoughtful) crime/surfing thriller Point Break.
Saturday (6/10) - Point Break plays at 7:00, Hot Fuzz plays at 9:30. Tickets
Tuesday (6/13) - Point Break plays at 4:40, Hot Fuzz plays at 7:30. Tickets
The World’s End and Invasion of the Body Snatchers
From its core premise to the iconic point-and-howl of the replaced, The World’s End riffs heavily on the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Both these movies are awesome, but goddamn do the promotional materials contain some serious spoilers. Just trust us on this one, OK? You won’t be disappointed.
Sunday (6/11) - Invasion of the Body Snatchers plays at 5:00, The World’s End plays at 7:30. Tickets
Wednesday (6/14) - The World’s End plays at 5:00, Invasion of the Body Snatchers plays at 7:30. Tickets
Bonus Flavour: Supercop
We know, it messes up the whole “pairs of movies” thing, but we couldn’t pass on a Cornetto/Cinema City crossover. Supercop introduced a lot of people to Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh, and for good reason. They bring some serious acting chops to the film, and their constant one-upping on set led to some of the most incredible stunt work ever put on film.
P.S. This is one of those “sequels” that requires no knowledge of previous entries. Just come on down and watch Oscar Winner Michelle Yeoh jump a dirt bike onto a moving train (for real).
Police Story 3: Supercop plays Thursday night at 7:00. Tickets
